Nevus spilus reminiscent at birth of congenital melanocytic nevus.

Abstract

Nevus spilus (NS) is a benign melanocytic proliferation, clinically characterized by a higher concentration of melanocytic nevi on hyperpigmented skin. Nevi may be present at birth and in the absence of background hyperpigmentation physicians should think of a nevus spilus when they are unusually concentrated on an area of skin, but nevi may also appear in later periods. The area on which there is the largest concentration of nevi is usually little or normally pigmented at birth but over the years it becomes more pigmented than the surrounding skin and therefore more visible. The nevus spilus reported here is exceptional because the bottom spot was more pigmented at birth, so as to suggest a melanocytic nevus, but then regressed at least clinically, although it continued to show melanin along the furrows on dermoscopy.
