Cephalhematoma.

Abstract

A 42-day-old boy was first observed due to a swelling of the left frontal region (Fig. 1) appeared 6 hours after birth (Fig. 1, inset). The patient was first-born, born at term with spontaneous delivery, with a weight of 3770 g and a height of 56 cm. At birth, the swelling had a diameter of about 4 cm and the neonatologist was unsure of its diagnosis. A smaller swelling, interpreted as cephalhematoma, regressed in a little over a month. Physical examination showed a plaque of about 3 cm, covered by normal skin, bluish in color, soft-elastic, painless, movable on the deep and superficial layers; inside the mass there were 3 nodules of 2 mm with increased consistency. Two months later at a check-up the physical examination was normal and the mother reported the disappearance of the mass at 2 months of life. The final diagnosis was cephalhematoma.
