Post-herpetic erythema multiforme.

Abstract

Antigens and DNA of Herpes Simplex virus can be demonstrated in the epidermis of patients with post-herpetic erythema multiforme; more generally in 65% of patients with recurrent erythema multiforme there is a history of herpes simplex (1). However, it is remarkable that there are only seven reports in the literature dedicated to post-herpetic erythema multiforme between 1955 and 2010 and that there are no reports after that year. In children, this phenomenon is even more evident. In children the prevalence of recurrent Herpes Simplex is high; we really observed more than two cases per month of cutaneous recurrent Herpes Simplex, which is the most frequent form in children, with an incidence of 1.5% of all skin disorders (1). However, there are only two reports regarding childhood post-herpetic erythema multiforme in the literature, highlighting the apparent uniqueness of our case.
